Beautiful high end vintage Mexican sterling silver salt and pepper shakers with tray. The set displays a fall theme of two (2) pumpkins setting on stands. Each convex section of the pumpkin displays a flower bloom with leaves under the flower. The silversmith has used lightly twisted wires as the pumpkin’s stem. The oblong serving tray also displays flower stampwork on every other convex section of the3 scallop cut edging. The pumpkin stands unscrew to fill each pumpkin with either salt or pepper.

Each pumpkin measures approximately 1 1/2” tall including the stand by 1 5/8” across or 1 1/2” diameter. The tray measures 5” by 3” with all three (3) pieces weighing 43.7 grams (1.54 oz or 1.40 ozt). Both shakers are hallmarked LHM inside a Hecho en Mexico DF circle. That tells you the set was made in Mexico and DF stands for “Distrito Federal” or the Federal District of Mexico City. They also have STERLING 925 along with an Eagle 38. The Mexican government ran a control of the sales of silver and had a documented detailed way of keeping track of all silver. All silversmiths had to register with the government. The Eagle stature was one way of many to keep track. This particular set displays an Eagle 38 which was shared with the likes of Los Castillo with Antonio Pineda and Miguel Garcia Martinez. Anyway, LHM was part of a fairly high class of Mexican silversmiths/jewelry businesses based in Mexico City. Well, so much for Mexican Jewelry Room 101 (grin). We haven’t cleaned the set because collectors sometimes prefer the vintage appearance and it’s a lot easier to clean than trying to put the patina back on.
