Bold very old vintage Zuni two strand thirty four piece hand carved obsidian bird fetish necklace! The necklace consists of thirty four (34) hand carved birds of different sizes, but mainly same style strung over the course of two (2) strands. Each strand is equal in length with one strand having eighteen (18) birds and the other strand having sixteen (16) birds. The necklace is missing two (2) birds, but it's not noticeable when worn. Each bird has a hole drilled straight through for the eyes with three to four notches on each side to show wing separation. None of the bird fetishes appear broken although some of the birds heads and tails are slightly different from the others. The artist has used 4mm tiger shell heshi beads to separate the birds and create the strands. The birds have been carved from old obsidian. All strung on cotton twine with two (2) old 7-8mm silver seamed beads on each end connecting the strands together. The twine on both sides have been tied together permanently.

The strands would measure approximately 30" end to end and a wearable length of 15 3/4" long. It weighs 95.6 grams (3.37 ounces). The carved birds are very old and I would place them, if not the whole necklace, as being made somewhere between the 1920's to 1940's. It may have been re-strung somewhere along the way?
