Large, bold, heavy, and old vintage Navajo or Hopi bear paw ring. The silversmith has created a silver bear paw with claws. The artist has used what I believe is an old natural oval cut and polished high quality green turquoise nugget from the Old Hachita Mines of New Mexico. The stone is set into a smooth bezel and used as the pad of the bear paw. The artist encircles the stone about 3/4’s of the way around with thick deep notched silver wire and fills in across the top with five (5) large silver buttons. Oddly the artist has applied multiple circular stampings with the exception on only one of the buttons. He finishes the bear paw by attaching five (5) claws made from triangular wire. The artist attaches the bear paw to a stout four (4) fingered split shank band and covers the sides with silver shields that sport stamped bear paw symbols. I’m slightly puzzled due the the bear paw symbols which are identical to the bear paw hallmark noted Hopi silversmith Andrew Saufkie uses, yet the one unstamped silver button could be signs of older Navajo silversmiths. In early to mid 1900’s some silversmiths would purposely and blatantly leave an unfinished spot in the decoration that would tell other silversmiths who made the piece prior to the time they actually started personally signing the jewelry. I do lean more towards the older Navajo made.

Anyway, the ring face measures 1 7/16” by 1 1/8” across and weighs a hefty 21.1 grams. It’s a size 10 1/2 and as stated above is someway hallmarked and definitely sterling silver. Large bold men’s bear paw turquoise ring! $279.95
