The serpentine group are greenish, brownish, or spotted minerals commonly found in serpentinite rocks. They are used as a source ofmagnesium and asbestos, and as a decorative stone. The name is thought to come from the greenish color being that of a serpent. Serpentinite is a rock composed of one or more serpentine group minerals. Minerals in this group are formed by serpentinization, a hydration and metamorphic transformation of ultramafic rock from the Earth's mantle. The mineral alteration is particularly important at the sea floor at tectonic plate boundaries.  (wikipedia)

This stone is used quite often by fetish carvers due to the ease of carving the stone.
