Beautiful older vintage 1920's Mission Indian School coiled basket! The basket is American Indian made using the old traditional coiled fiber design and natural dyes to create a geometrical maze outline on the basket. It turns up at the edge somewhat similar to a pie pan shape. We obtained it from a private estate auction and it's said to be made by George Wharton James or one of his pupils. Mr. James was a teacher and writer on the making of Native American Indian baskets in the early 1900's. The basket's in great condition with no broken fiber or stitching. It is slightly loose at the end of the last coil, but isn't coming apart or broken. The basket measures approximately 1 1/4” deep by 9" diameter across the top and 5 5/8" diameter across the bottom. It weighs 81 grams (2.86 ounces). Coiled baskets are made like coiled pottery. Thin strips of fibers, wood, leaves, or grass are wrapped into a bundle which is coiled around in a continuous spiral. Beautiful vintage coiled basket in excellent shape for it's age!  $199.95
